| Ironically it is sometimes the questions that we don't ask that could be of more help to us that the ones we do! To that end I have to say that I don't have all the answers; but then neither does anyone else! What I think separates me from others is that I have been incredibly inquisitive from a very young age. Even as a small school child I was asking WHY!
So, here I attempt to answer some of the many questions I get asked; almost daily.
What can Therapy do for me:
Therapy can bring about change in a person because it allows them to see themselves in a way they never could or have before. It allows them to gain a perspective of their subconscious world which is not available to them at the conscious level. Because much of our behaviour is subconsciously driven it leaves us almost helpless in trying to fathom out its irrational effect on our life. For more information... click here
Is seeking help a sign of weakness:
On the contrary I think it is more a sign of a mental strength, in that a person moves past ego to seek a solution; although I understand for some it may not feel that way.
Are you mentally ill If you seek help:
Most of the time this is not the case and a good Therapist will always ask if you have had a medical check-up for certain conditions, e.g. Stress, Anxiety, Depression etc. The reason being that many of the symptoms of these conditions are similar to that of an organic disorder. Of course there are some mental conditions that are mostly beyond the reach of Therapy; at least not without some form of medical intervention.
However, the overwhelming majority of emotional conditions are the result of some difficulty in the way we process cognition (thought) Affect (emotion) and Conation (motivation). These are primary to how we function as a human being and unfortunately none of us arrive with a user’s manual. And even if we did it wouldn't be of much use because our environment plays a huge part in how these processes develop. Therapy, in a sense, is that user’s manual and it allows each of us to discover how we each uniquely work as opposed to how the human mind works in general. E.g. Psychology can tell you that 63% of all people will have some kind of mental/emotional difficulty in their life. What it can't tell you is whether you will be in the 63% or the 37% bracket!
Medication hasn't helped; will Therapy:
Medication, in the context of emotional or mental conditions, largely deals with the symptoms of a condition, than the cause. And to be sure, if you are suffering from extreme anxiety or depression, it is a very welcome intervention. However, as long as the root cause, or initial sensitising event, remains intact the symptoms will generally remain, albeit their effect can be managed, to varying degrees via chemical stimulation.
One of the biggest concerns about Medication is the side effects and the advancements made over the past several years have greatly reduced these; but not eliminated them! For certain anxiety or depressive disorders a combined approach of Medication and Psychotherapy has proved to be highly effective in many cases.
However, the primary aim of talking Therapies, is the resolution of the initiating event(s). Solve the problem; find the cure! And Therapy has helped many people resolve issues where Medical science can find no cause. Sometimes to the point of denying the condition!
Myths & Facts about Hypnosis
A hypnotist has magical powers:
This is completely false. A hypnotist has no special powers. However, the skilful Hypnotist may help you attain a level of trance that may be more difficult to achieve by yourself.
Only weak minded people can be hypnotised:
False. In fact, the opposite is often the truth. The more intelligent you are the easier it is to be hypnotised. In certain cases of mental disability, hypnosis is impossible. Also, people under the influence of alcohol or certain mind altering drugs may also find it difficult to achieve a satisfactory level of trance.
Under hypnosis you are unconscious:
Not true at all. Under Hypnosis you are in a heightened state of awareness, completely aware of yourself and surroundings. You will be able to hear, understand and respond to everything within the session.
You can get stuck in Hypnosis:
Completely false. Even if the hypnotist left the room after putting you into deep Hypnotic trance, you will either open your eyes after not hearing his voice for a while or you will slip into a brief sleep and awaken normally.
People who are in a hypnotic trance will reveal secrets or say things they will regret:
When someone is in a hypnotic trance (deep relaxation) they can hear every word the Hypnotist is saying and they can choose how they want to respond. The person in trance always remains in full control. When you see “stage hypnosis” and audience members are jumping about the stage clucking like chickens – remember that they volunteered to do that in full knowledge that they would be expected to do something out of the ordinary.
Sometimes hypnotherapy is used for the purpose of revealing repressed memories or information. Persons undergoing hypnosis for those reasons often reach deeper trance states than normally used in hypnosis. They are actively seeking to reveal the repressed information. Under ordinary conditions, a hypnotherapist cannot make someone reveal any information against their will.
You can be hypnotised against your will:
All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. A French pharmacist named Emile Coue made that statement in the early 1900’s. Today every student and practitioner of hypnotherapy knows this as a core truth. You have to want to be hypnotised before a trance state can be achieved. There are methods for inducing a trance (deep relaxation) in resistant subjects; however, even those methods are not effective unless you intend to be hypnotised.
I wasn’t hypnotised, I heard every word:
A state of deep relaxation means that you are relatively free of the usual busy thought-traffic that bombards your mind in everyday consciousness. Without all the usual distracting clutter, your mind is able to direct itself and focus much more clearly. As you achieve relaxation, the hypnotherapist might suggest that you imagine yourself in your favourite place, at your favourite time of year. In a relaxed state, you are able to do this with ease and believably. In other words, you can hear the birds around you or feel the warmth of the midday sun. The hypnotherapist merely guides your journey. When hypnosis is used for therapeutic purposes such as to stop smoking, the therapist uses phrases (suggestions) based on what you have stated as a desired outcome (“you enjoy breathing deeply”, “you feel calm throughout the day”, etc.). You will hear these phrases with a depth of focus not normally accessible in the ordinary waking
